Jennifer Garner acknowledges that while Valentine's Day can be an "obnoxious" holiday, she thinks guys could use some lessons in the sentimentality department.

Garner, who appears in the star-studded rom-com Valentine's Day, told George Lopez on Thursday's Lopez Tonight" that the most important thing guys can do is "acknowledge, in some sweet way … 'I love you.' Just make us feel wooed."

She added: "Write a quick note or pick flowers or pick the grass out of your backyard and show up with it with a sweet smile … You don't have to spend a lot of money, just be sweet."

The mom of two, 37, looked anything but sweet, however, when she mimicked a scene from Valentine's Day and destroyed a heart-shaped piñata with Lopez.

"In Mexico you smash piñatas, in Greece you smash plates. We have the Demolition Derby, but that's it," Garner said. "White Americans, we need to find something to smash. It's good for you!"

Former Miss South Carolina Teen USA Caite Upton became the punchline of a joke — and a viral-video sensation — when she seriously flubbed a question about geography and education at the 2007 Miss Teen USA pageant. She figured what better way to prove herself more worldly and intelligent than to compete in the 16th installment of The Amazing Race, which begins Sunday on CBS. The 20-year-old model, who now lives in L.A., spoke with PEOPLE about her racing partner, her boyfriend Brent Horne, the pageant advantage and her plans for the cash prize. –Carrie Bell

You have to appreciate the irony of the girl known around the world for botching a question about geography being on The Amazing Race.
Actually, I’m pretty confident with my geography. [Laughing] I named a couple of countries in my answer. I was very confident going in and I’m very excited to have the chance to show people what I am capable of and to prove that there’s more to me than a mistake I made in a stressful situation when I was a teenager.

Do you think other teams who realized who you are underestimated you?
I felt like the people definitely underestimated me the first round. They figured I would be your typical pageant girl that wasn’t that bright and might not know too many things. But I think I proved very quickly that I couldn’t be discounted. They realized there’s more to me than a silly question.

Racers often benefit from the help of locals, especially ones with some notoriety like Rob and Amber, the poker girls or the Harlem Globetrotters. Do you think your recognizable face was an advantage?
I don’t think it’s unfair. I consider myself an average person. I don’t think of myself as famous and nobody gave us special treatment along the way.

Why’d you want to participate in the show?
I’m a huge fan and so is Brent and I constantly talked about applying. I’m so blessed they chose me. It was the greatest experience of my life.

You’ve only been dating Brent, 28, for a little more than a year. Were you worried that the stress of the Race would ruin your relationship as it has with a few past couples?
We were friends first. We started dating a year into our friendship and we’ve already been through a lot of crap. I figured doing the Race would take our relationship to the next level and would make it clear whether we are meant for each other. We’re still together. We survived the Race!

Are you encouraged by how well last season’s pageant girl performed?
Pageant girls from past seasons like Christie [Lee Woods] and Ericka [Dunlap] all proved they shouldn’t be underestimated. I looked up to them and the fact that they did well motivated me. There’s more to pageant girls than looks. Maybe the pageant system is good preparation for the show. You’re used to stress, competition and cameras.

What is one trait or skill you possess that helped you on the Race?
I’m a very well-rounded person so I don’t think I had just one helpful trait. I might not look like it on the outside but I’m a big tomboy. I’m intelligent, athletic and understanding. I speak a little bit of other languages. I love to win and was prepared to do anything to win.

Was there one that hindered you?
I tend to be very impatient, but for some reason, I wasn’t on the Race. One thing that probably hurt us was going too quickly. Both of us have played fast-paced sports and are always on the go, so we would get going and miss things.

What were you most afraid would be a task?
My biggest fear is being in a confined space and suffocating to death. Also, I’m not a big eater, so I would make Brent do any task that required that.

If you did win the million, what would you do with it?
To tell you the truth, I do love the Maserati so it is up there on my list of things I want. But I would have given $25,000 to my mother, $25,000 to my father, $15,000 to my grandmother, pay for college and divide $100,000 of it between various charities to help animals and people. I’m big on volunteering. Maybe I could get Brent to use his half to buy me the Maserati. Hey baby, Valentine’s Day is coming up!

"I'll be in the room. I'm going to stay close to my wife and make sure that she is all right," Dane tells Ellen DeGeneres on her show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show set to air Monday. "I'm really excited. I'm also very interested."

The Valentine's Day star and wife Rebecca Gayheart have a name in mind, he says, but "Rebecca wants to wait until she sees her before we give her the name."

When DeGeneres asks whether the couple was continuing the celebrity trend of "weird names," Dane replies, "we went straight down the middle with this one."

Two names Dane's baby definitely will not have? Jane Dane or Great Dane – both jokingly suggested by DeGeneres.

When Holly Robinson Peete was told by a friend that John Mayer – a musician her whole family admired – had called her "gorgeous" in a Playboy interview, she blushed and even told E! in a widely reported interview that she felt flattered.

But the apparent compliment turned sour when Robinson Peete read the full interview, complete with his statement about African American women and his use of the N-word. "I was disgusted and offended," says Robinson Peete, who herself had faced criticism from some who felt she had initially been an apologist for Mayer.

Robinson Peete reveals to PEOPLE that Mayer has reached out to her to apologize for involving her in his firestorm, but not for his actual words. The actress says it's "time for him to really just drop the frat boy act" and "take responsibility for these hurtful comments."

A spokesperson for Mayer says: "On Wednesday, John apologized for his remarks via Twitter and again in public that night. His remorse is genuine and he has expressed sincere regret for all of his word choices."

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Robinson Peete spoke in detail about the issue:

Q: Would you have been so flattered by John Mayer stating you're "gorgeous" if you'd read what he said in the rest of the interview?

A: The answer is no. I would never have been as flattered. As a matter of fact, it went from a compliment to being an insult. That anyone would think that I would be so giddy about this young man's compliment that I would compromise my integrity as an African American woman is the most disturbing part for me. I foolishly and impulsively commented (to E!) on a sound bite from an interview that was sent to me by a girlfriend and I didn't know the context at all. … Clearly, after I understood how John Mayer's comments were bookended by racial insensitivities and this racially charged, rambling diatribe that denigrated black women, it became a whole other animal.

Q: How do you feel about what Mayer said?

A: I was disgusted and offended. Especially when I started reading his surrounding comments. In the whole body of the article, there wasn't anything that wasn't offensive. … It was beyond inappropriate. It's crucial for African American women to understand that I would never knowingly gush about such a compliment had I had any clue that it was bookended by these racially denigrating comments about black women. I feel disgusted by it. I went from flattered to flat-out pissed.

Q: Do you feel John Mayer is a racist?

A: Is it possible to say something racially charged, bigoted and flat out ignorant and not be a racist person? That's the question. My impression is that it's possible, but I want to make it clear that this guy has some major issues to sort through and a whole lot of apologies to make. I heard some apologies about the N-word, and I've seen him crying, which seemed sincere. But I don't know if he understands how much he hurt black women's feelings.

Q: Has he reached out to you to apologize?

A: He was very remorseful about the fact that I was inadvertently tangled up into this mess. He reached out to me via email. ... He did not apologize for his comments. ... At this point, it doesn't feel right for me to totally accept his apology. It's time for him to really just drop the frat boy act and take responsibility for everything that he said, no matter how painful it's going to be for him.

For Jillian Harris and her beau, Ed Swiderski, Valentine’s Day means spending time with family — and escaping the chill of Chicago — by spending a 10-day vacation in Maui, relaxing with Harris’s parents and other family members. “I think we are likely going lean on each other for our first Valentine’s together,” Harris says. “We’ll likely be getting each other a Mai Tai and maybe a nice lei!”

Outside of surfing lessons and skydiving at their dreamy beach location, Harris says she and Swiderski are planning a relaxed and low-key holiday, and she recommends the same for every couple out there. “For a romantic Valentine’s Day,” she says, “I think just focus on each other. Put those darn phones and computers away and turn off the TV and have a good old-fashioned conversation!”

By way of example, Harris says, “I love talking about things I am grateful for. It always puts me in a good mood, so that would be a great little way to show someone what you really love about them and can’t live without!”

Harris adds, “V-Day is all about love, love, love. Don’t forget to be extra kind to everyone that week. Smile and say hello to passersby on the street and if you have time, lend a hand to those in need.” – Cynthia Wang
When contacted, Semonti Stephens, a spokeswoman for the First Lady, tells PEOPLE of the ad campaign: We did not consent. As far as Mrs. Obamas feelings about the PETA cause in general, Stephens says only, Mrs. Obama does not wear fur. PETAs response?

The fact is that Michelle Obama has issued a statement indicating that she doesnt wear fur, and the world should know that in PETAs eyes, that makes her pretty fabulous, the organizations president Ingrid Newkirk told the press. Andrea DeSimone

Katy Perry is thrilled to have a "teammate" in her brand new fiancé Russell Brand.

"I'm excited to find a partner who can just be my teammate," the "I Kissed a Girl" singer tells Glamour in its February "Man Issue," on newsstands Jan. 12. "And there's got to be respect. For me, that's hard because it's easy for me to steamroll guys. I need a man who tells me the party's over, that it's time to go home, because [we] have to work in the morning.”

The interview was done before the couple confirmed their New Year's Eve engagement on Wednesday, but Perry does deliver the dish on meeting her man.

'"When [Russell] was filming Get Him to the Greek, I did a cameo with him. My scene called for me to make out with him. And on the way down the stairs after the scene, I was hopping like a bunny. I hop like a bunny when I’m happy – I get a bit childlike," says Perry, 25, who has been dating Brand, 34, since the fall.

Perry also talks about the challenge of getting close to people. “I have always been this character, but I kind of cartoon-ized myself a little bit [in my stage persona]. So when someone really likes me, it's like here comes a person! I wonder if you can handle this."

The bump watch could soon start for Khloe Kardashian.

The reality star and her Los Angeles Laker husband Lamar Odom, who got married in September just a month after meeting, are "not doing anything" to prevent her from getting pregnant, Kardashian said in a radio interview Wednesday on Valentine in the morning.

Kardashian stopped short of admitting that the couple are actively trying for a baby, but says they would like to be parents together. "We both want to," she says. "We're in an ideal situation. We're just happy together.”

However, Odom might have a faster timeframe in mind. Kardashian says her hubby wants a baby "tomorrow." In fact, Odom rushed out for pregnancy tests after Kardashian had an upset stomach on New Year’s Day.

"I just woke up and start throwing up all day long," she recalls. "He was like, 'Yes, you're pregnant,' and I was like, ‘No, I’m just sick.' "

Kardashian is a new aunt to three-week-old Mason Disick, son of sister Kourtney and longtime boyfriend Scott Disick.

Casey Johnson's death at age 30 didn't entirely surprise those in her inner circle.

Friends tell PEOPLE the troubled Johnson & Johnson heiress led an increasingly erratic existence in the months before she was found dead in her Los Angeles home Tuesday. "She had so many ups and downs, but lately, it wasn't very good," a pal tells PEOPLE. "She tried rehab, wanted things to change … but it didn't stick."

The source says Johnson had recently been acting more and more bizarre. "Just a few months ago, she was living like a crazy person," the pal says. "Super erratic behavior. People could barely be around her."

Johnson, an openly gay socialite engaged to Tila Tequila, had a history of diabetes. Her cause of death appears to be natural, according to officials, but toxicology reports are still pending.

"Casey thought being with a woman would make her edgy," another friend tells PEOPLE. "She never had luck with men because she was so weird and awkward."

Strained too were relationships with other friends and family. The friend says she spent a lot of time with Johnson until a year ago – when she stopped talking to her. "She was very troubled. Several of her family members didn't speak to her. The other Johnson kids felt she damaged their name."

Johnson was estranged from her family because of her crazy antics and mishandling of her fortune, friends say. "Her family couldn't handle her behavior and lack of respect, so they cut her off," the pal says. "They thought it would teach her to turn things around."

With her divorce to Jon finally behind her, Kate Gosselin started off 2010 by spending some serious quality time with a new guy — and their date lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, who has tended to the tresses of Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway, spent nearly 20 hours last week meticulously adding hundreds of extensions to Kate’s hair. Luckily, they both agree that their time together was a smashing success. “Kate was an absolute sweetheart, I loved her,” says Gibson, who also appears on the TLC show What Not To Wear. While he knew that transforming the look that launched a thousand Halloween wigs would be a challenge, Gibson reveals it was the super-short, spiky hair in the back of Kate’s notorious former hairstyle that proved most daunting. “Bonding extensions to those little hairs really took time. But in all those hours, she didn’t complain once. She was so open to whatever I suggested, and willing to try just about anything.” Well, with one notable exception: At first, Gibson reports, Kate was reluctant to let go of the thick, jaw-length shock of hair in the front of her face in favor of bangs. “She wasn’t sure about bangs,” says Gibson, “But I find many women have that one thing they’re afraid to let go of, that one ‘security blanket’ part of their look, whether it’s a fear of going shorter or darker or something. But once they finally let go and embrace the change, they always love it.” Indeed,

Kate gave in on the bangs and was thrilled with the sleek, layered look Gibson achieved. “It’s good to have hair again,” she says. “I know this will be more upkeep than my old look, but I’m ready for it. I’m just grateful I don’t have to go through the awkward growing-out process of short hair. I get criticized for everything I do enough as it is!” To see more of Kate’s brand-new look — and to hear more about how her kids are doing, what she thinks of the latest Jon drama, and whether she’s ready for romance — pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

The people have spoken – and they love Sandra Bullock!

The Blind Side star beat out stiff competition, including Jennifer Aniston and Kristen Stewart, to be named favorite movie actress at the 36th Annual People's Choice Awards, televised live from L.A.'s Nokia Theatre Wednesday.

No stranger to the ceremony – this marks the star's fifth win for favorite movie actress since her first nomination in 1996 – Bullock, 45, was a double winner Wednesday night: Her film The Proposal, costarring Ryan Reynolds, was named favorite comedy.

"I am only up here because I am fortunate to work with people who make me look good," a tearful Bullock said while accepting her award. "[Thanks] most of all to my family . . . Life is hard sometimes, but we get through with laughter."

The actress also acknowledged her fans. "Thank you to everyone who voted," she said, "because you're voting for all the people who make me look good – and you're making me look very good."

Otherwise, it was Twilight-mania at the Nokia Theatre, where voters didn't forget about the blockbuster. The teen vampire flick swept the award show, claiming four trophies in total, including favorite movie, favorite on-screen team (an award given out to the entire cast) and favorite franchise. Meanwhile, Taylor Lautner was awarded favorite breakout actor as the series' sexy werewolf, Jacob Black.

The vampire craze made its way to the television screen too, as HBO's True Blood sucked up the favorite TV obsession award.

Music to Their Ears
In music news, Taylor Swift continued her recent award show sweep, nabbing favorite female artist, while fellow country star Keith Urban won favorite male artist.

And newly engaged Carrie Underwood had plenty to smile about, too. The singer, who picked up three awards last year, was named favorite country artist for the second year in a row.

Other major winners included Lady Gaga, who won favorite breakout music artist and favorite pop artist. Johnny Depp won favorite movie actor, while Miley Cyrus won breakout movie actress.

Going Online
For the first time this year, fans voted in the new category favorite Web celeb – which went to Twitter guru Ashton Kutcher.

Over 60 million fan votes were counted, according to producers, which determined the winners. Queen Latifah emceed the proceedings, which marks the kick-off of awards-show season in Hollywood.

Don't call Carrie Underwood a Bridezilla!

The newly engaged country singer has some simple requests when it comes time to tie the knot with her hockey player fiancé Mike Fisher. "[I want] a groom, good food and an open bar," Underwood, 26, tells PEOPLE on the red carpet at the People's Choice Awards at Los Angeles's Nokia Theatre.

She may not know who's designing her wedding dress yet – or have picked a wedding date – but Underwood has some thoughts about how she plans to look on her big day.

"I'm Southern," she says. "I like big hair and eyeliner. I want my wedding day to be me, so I'll probably be rocking some big hair and some eyeliner."

Underwood, who just released her third album Play On, will kick off her tour in April – but she has a strategy for staying in touch with Fisher while they're apart. "We're big texters," she says. "We talk on the phone. I-Chatting, I don't know what we'd do without it to be honest – and face time is the most important."

There’s no stopping supermodel mama Heidi Klum! Just three months after welcoming her fourth child, daughter Lou Sulola, the Project Runway host announces plans to launch two maternity lines next month. Lavish by Heidi Klum and Loved by Heidi Klum will debut online and in stores Feb. 12 for A Pea in the Pod and Motherhood Maternity, respectively. (Heidi follows in the footsteps of Nicole Richie, who debuted her own line for A Pea in the Pod in August.) In keeping with Heidi’s own sexy maternity style, Lavish includes 15 pieces of “iconic style and seamless fit.” One highlight? A slinky black maxidress, $128, worthy of a red carpet arrival! Loved will offer 14 affordable items made for comfort. Pieces include a loose-fitting floral print top, $40, and blue button-down tunic, $30. Heidi brings a heck of a lot of sartorial expertise (including a combined three years of pregnancies!) to her lines. “I experienced fashion challenges during my four pregnancies and combined my knowledge of what works in terms of style, comfort and practicality to create these lines,” Heidi said today in a statement. “Being pregnant shouldn’t stop you from being fashionable and feeling great about your changing body. It’s an exciting journey.” We can’t wait to see more!
